im listening to: blossom dearie

my mom walked into my room earlier today, i had blossom dearie playing really loud. she sat on my bed for about half an hour, silent. eventually she says "listening to blossom feels like you're floating with the wind. i can't believe you listen to this music. this is my music". i am in love obsessed with blossom dearie, and if you're a lover of music, do yourself a favor an download some of her music. i love all of her work, but the song that is playing right now (literally as i'm typing this) is the french version of 'lullaby of birdland'. just stunning.

im listening to: szjerdene

several thousand people
only you that i had in mind
untie all your burdens and lay them all to rest here
i didn't get the choice to grow up with you
but that doesn't mean that i know less about you
several thousand people
down the lights but still you will shine---szjerdene

szjerdene (pronounced jhurdeen) was introduced to me by my beautiful friend mlungisi and i've literally been in love with her since! she is only 22 years old (my age...im a lady who will reveal her age, haha) and is quietly taking over the music scene. it's hard for me to say what kind of genre she is in, it sounds like many things to me - very diffirent but very awesome.

she is currently working on her first album (exicte!) which will hopefully be ready next year (crosses fingers). my absolute favorite song has to be think it through although leila's tale is also incredibly amazing. click on the links to listen to them or you can alternatively check out her website

not only is szjerdene an amazinng muscian but she is also extremely stylish! i got a few of her looks from her facebook page which are gorgeous.

enjoy!

i speak michael jackson

Today I was travelling from the Port Elizabeth airport back to Grahamstown. My shuttle driver Leon was a very Afrikaans man that barely spoke English, and I, a Xhosa and English speaker barely know any Afrikaans aside from the essentials i.e. ek kan nie praat Afrikaans nie (I can’t speak Afrikaans), ek kan nie verstaan Afrikaans nie (I don’t understand Afrikaans), ek is baie honger (I am very hungry), dankie and asseblief (thank you and please) – just enough to get by.

The hour and a half drive seemed like it would be a very long and quiet one because obviously Leon and I couldn’t have a conversation. But as we were pulling out of the airport, Leon said something in Afrikaans and all I picked up was “music” and “Michael Jackson” to which I replied “I love Michael Jackson!” Leon laughed and pulled out his MJ Greatest Hits CD. Leon and I sang along to all our favourite MJ songs word-for-word, with very dramatic gestures here and there. It dawned on me during my very raspy rendition of ‘Dirty Diana’ that true musical legends are able to reach people that they probably couldn’t even have a conversation with. Music is a language, and MJ spoke it well.

Leon and I couldn’t speak either of each other’s languages but we both spoke Michael Jackson fluently.

that beyonce work ethic

it's exams for me now (uuuuugggh!) and beyonce has been an  incredible inspiration for me and my friends. she is probably one of the most hardworking people in the music industry, always striving to do better, go bigger, top herself. we could all learn a thing or two from 'b'. so whenever i'm struggling to study with all the caffeine wearing off, i play 'who run the world (girls) and 'best thing i never had' and i turn on....THAT BEYONCE WORK ETHIC!

[beyonce's new album drops on the 28th of june]
