rhodes 4th year fine art exhibition (part2)

these are some of the pictures i took at the fine art exhibition last year. i chose not to post them all out of respect to the artists, you can see more by clicking on the links below. enjoy!

suvania naidoo

suvania's exhibition of work was called ZA/in. it is about her identity as a south african indian female living in a westernised, post-colonial time and explores the duality of being both indian and south african at the same time. all of her peices are made by suvania. just amazing.

denys dixie

denys exhibition was inspired by carl jung's dream theory and the idea of the subconcious mind. in these panels, the characters are replicated selves, performing inexplicable activities in an unadored space. the lack of narrative sequence is deliberate as the figures appear to be in a moment of dream-like lucidity. each of these panels is handpainted by denys and they were metres long! the detail is unbelievable, to the extent that  you could see every hair on her arm, eyebrows and eyelashes. undescribable.

minke wasserman
this was probably one of the coolest exhibition i saw. the location was perfect, a round concrete room in the depths of the monument. there is definately a sense of discomfort because of all the conflicting beliefs, thoughts or emotions. i just thought this was spectacular.

rhodes 4th year fine art exhibition (part 1)

a few weeks back, the final year fine art students at rhodes university has their exhibition. they had been working on the body's of work their entire year. rhodes really does have incredible talent. i took a few pictures of some of my favorite artists. enjoy!

*
warren canning

warren's oil paintings are really very unique. in this particular body of work, warren created aerial views of buildings and locations. what was really cool was that by scanning the barcodes next to each painting, you could see exactly which location was painted. incredible right?!

*
calypso ray

this was absolutely one my favorites. calypso's body of work was inspired by people dealing with mental disorders, and how the simplests of tasks can seem incredibly difficult. calypso also had a video playing in which she used her feet to light a candle with a match, shave her legs and open a beer bottle with a bottle opener. really very incredible!

"drawing from my own experiences and hardships, dis-order is a collection of metaphors dealing with the invisible disorder that only the sufferer experiences" - calypso ray

kate brook-hart

kate's work was also one my favorites. i couldn't take more pictures because there would literally be hundreds of photos (and you can check out the rest on her website). kate's work was inspired by the mechanisation of the nation (south africa). it looked and broke down south africa's current political situation, capitalism in south africa, the every day lives of south african's and south africa pre-and-post-democracy according to kate (and public opinion). it's not sinister, but rather realistic. brilliant!

rhodes drama dept presents : INNOVATIONS

last night my housemates and i went to innovations. best decision ever. innovations is a production put on by the rhodes university drama students where short skits are all presented. it is a diverse mash up of very different aspects of the theatre experience! so all of us there could get a glimpse of the different types of performance styles without having to understand the technicality of it. regardless of whether you watched because you went to support a friend or because you are a theatre buff - you were entertained.

the hilarious mc's were sandi dlangalala and tyson ngubeni. they definitely kept the crowd awake and alive. i hope to see both these boys in many more theatre productions. there were 11 performances, all of which were amazing! 'working couples' a dance piece exploring the sexual and romantic tension between lovers, choreographed by jethro thomas and starring jethro and hannah minnie was very intense. i got mia micheals (of so you think you can dance) vibes from it. my absolute favorite was 'takie' performed by kelsey stewart and megan wright. it was a mimed piece that displayed two very fascinating personalities in a life of poverty and deprival. it was amazing! pure perfection to me, very very well done.

there were musical acts, with sphamandla dlakwe and matthew de klerk performing their unique interpretation of owl city's fireflies. vuyo kumalo gave a stellar performance of 'stars' from the musical les miseribles. ndumiso ndlovu paid a tribute to john legend performing 'everybody knows' getting the crowd involved. frans mathubi, a jazz lounge/indie cafe band is definitely one to look out for and i'm hoping to do a profile on them soon. four very beautiful ladies performed a high-energy hip-hop/burlesque dance piece which worked out beautifully!

grahamstowm has a lot of talent and i will through this blog, showcase some of the diversity and all round coolness that g-town has in it! so i promise to do more profiles on musicians, artists, dj's, photographers, and people in grahamstown. this will hopefully be an informative blog, that lets everyone know more about what is happening in this town of ours!

rivonia trial

Rivonia Trial
presented by the south africa state theatre & pambili productions
written by : aubrey sekhabi, mpumelelo paul grootboom & mandla dube
directed by: aubrey sekhabi & mpumelelo paul grootboom
7 april 2011- 22 may 2011 at state theatre (pretoria)
length: 2 hour 30 mins, no under 13's allowed

one of the most amazing productions i've seen. it was a very interactive play where each person watching was made to feel like they were part of the production. rivonia trial is back by popular demand and follows the historical trial through the eyes of the women of the trialist and witnesses. i had the opportunity to see it last year and for all those that can see it, please check it out! it is definately worth it.
